Equatorial Guinea replaces disqualified Congo for CHAN 2024
Equatorial Guinea has been confirmed as Congo's replacement for CHAN 2025 following a CAF ruling that disqualified the "African Red Devils" due to eligibility breaches.
Barely a week after the CHAN draws were conducted at the KICC, Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a ruling disqualifying Congo, known as the "African Red Devils," from participating in the tournament scheduled for August.
The decision stems from eligibility breaches by the Congolese team. Equatorial Guinea had lodged a complaint, alleging that Congo’s team failed to present valid national licenses during their matches against Equatorial Guinea in the qualifiers. Additionally, Congo fielded Mankou Nguembete Japhet Eloi, a player who was deemed ineligible to participate in the qualifiers.

Congo, who had initially been placed in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Nigeria, and Sudan, will now be replaced by Equatorial Guinea.
The competition, which features a 19-team structure, is divided into four groups. Group A, dubbed the "Group of Death," includes hosts Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DRC Congo, and Zambia. Group B comprises hosts Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, and the Central African Republic. Group C brings together hosts Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Q2, and Q1. Group D, now featuring Equatorial Guinea instead of Congo, remains unchanged with Senegal, Sudan, and Nigeria.
